Juried Art Show
The juried art show was a real success, not only did one of my pieces get in, which i was totally surprised at, but all of the pieces were really awesome. Lindsay won best in show for her wood motion sculpture. I was really jealous of her skill with wood when i was watching her make it, she made it seem so simple, but really i spent hours on my project and it didn't turn out half as good as hers. Her sanding was so good that when it was painted it looked as if it could have been made out of plastic. The colors that she chose to use contrasted nicely together and made that piece look like a child's play toy.
Another piece i really like and thought was interesting was Tim's hanging man. It looked just like him which is funny. I really like the glazes, and am disappointed that we don't get to use bright and vibrant colors like the ones on his sculpture. I think it was funny that this sculpture depicted him so well, from the tall lankyness of the body to the color of the clothes, it you know Tim you know that this is what he looks like and he wears those green pants and orange sweatshirt.
I also loved Marj's pieces, her glazes always come out so interesting and beautiful, I've seen her spend hours in the studio just glazing one or two pieces. In order to get the effects she gets you have to have a knowledge of not only how the glazes work together but where to place it in the kiln to get the brightest colors possible. you also have to know which pieces sit next to yours in the kiln to make sure that the glazes that are prone to jumping don't make it onto your piece. The white jar with the red and blue glops on it was my favorite; what i think is mamo white base turned a perfect white instead of different colors caused by jumping.
The juried Art show really give art students view of what is offered in the art department, which is a fairly large spectrum even though it doesn't seem like it when you just read about it. It also gives of examples of what could be accomplished here by showing what your fellow students are doing. This is also a good way to get yourself out there and see what people have to say about your work.
